2017 marks the 40th anniversary of the end of the Emergency in India – perhaps the darkest period in our recent political history. The Emergency was declared following the judgment in one case – that of Indira Gandhi v. Raj Narain.
myLaw, which makes courses for learning the law online, has produced a video on the story of this case. It features interviews with Prashant Bhushan (whose book, The Case That Shook India, gives a detailed account of the case) and legal legend Shanti Bhushan who represented the petitioner in this case.
Anyone who is interested in the political and legal history of India will find it compelling viewing. Law students and younger lawyers may find it particularly interesting to watch Shanti Bhushan talk about how he strategized and prepared for the arguments before the Allahabad High Court.
