The World Bank has released the World Development Report 2017 on ‘Governance and the Law’. The official webpage of the report is here. The report itself is available for download here. Chapter 3, on the role of law in governance for development, may be of particular interest to readers. The chapter makes several references to the Indian legal system: on informal women’s courts, child labour regulations, the Indian Supreme Court’s social rights enforcement, laws against gender-based violence, among others. Other portions of the report also contain references to Indian legal developments: for instance, the chapter on ‘Citizens as Agents of Change’ refers to the bottom-up movement that led to the adoption of the RTI Act, 2005.
