Beginning today, the Constitution Bench comprising the Chief Justice, Justices R.V.Raveendran, J.M.Panchal, D.K.Jain, and P.Sathasivam has started hearing a bunch of petitions challenging the 73rd and 74th Constitutional amendments, providing for reservations for backward classes, and women in Panchayats and municipalities. Today, Rama Jois, representing a petitioner, began his arguments. (K.Krishna Murthy v. Union of India -W.P.[C]356/1994). He argued that Constitution consciously avoided reservations in the electoral field except for the SCs and STs; therefore, the reservations for OBCs and women are contrary to democracy and basic structure. He will continue the arguments tomorrow.
