Gopal Subramanium, the current Solicitor General was recently elected as the Chairman of the Bar Council of India. We wish him the very best as he pilots this body and the profession that it represents to new heights.
In an earlier post, we highlighted a Supreme Court ruling that relied extensively on a report by Mr Subramanium and mandated the conduct of bar exams this year. Now that he has been elected as the Bar Council Chairman, the prospects of such an exam in the near future seem real.

shamnad, if this goes through, the BCI must simultaneously relax its stranglehold on legal education in india. you determine educational standard, we will decide professional standards: sounds like a fair bargain. but are the law schools willing to stand up and demand academic autonomy?

An earlier post of mine in this regard referred to a directorate of legal education within the BCI….again an aspect suggested by the SG in his report to the SC and which the SC wholeheartedly supported.
The Directorate is now functioning with two academics at the helm and i suspect this is the BCI's way of ensuring that there are no parallel calls for their legal education mandate to be circumscribed. But from an institutional perspective, it must be circumscribed and limited only to legal education that has a significant nexus to the practice of law. And you're right that academics must ensure that this limitation is made clear as we debate the progress of reforms on legal education in this country.
