Call for Applications: Short-term research stipends for emerging legal scholars from India

The Chair for Public and Comparative Law at Humboldt University Berlin together with Dr. Benedikt Naarmann offer short-term research stipends for emerging  legal scholars from India, who would like to  come  to  Berlin  in  order  to  prepare  or  advance  a  research  project  in  comparative law.  Stipend holders will spend up  to  two  months  in  Berlin  and  be  part  of  a  vibrant  research  community  that includes  interaction  with  Professor  Dann  and  German  as  well  as  international researchers around him.


Thematic focus: 

We welcome proposals in the area of Indian public law, preferably with (but not limited to) a

comparative focus. Themes of special interest concern …

the intersection of criminal and constitutional law, such as … 

–  Criminal law protection of morality

–  Political dissent as problem of constitutional and criminal law (sedition etc.)

–  Death penalty – issues under Indian constitutional and international law

the regulation of public goods, such as … 

–  Right to food / water in India, other states and international law

–  Land rights in India and beyond

–  Public space and private regulation

the right to information, such as …  

–  Right to information and the protection of privacy

–  Internet, freedom of expression and access to information

–  Access to information, elections and political deliberations

rules of democratic governance, such as …  

–  Democracy in Diversity: enabling participation and voice in heterogeneous society

–  Participation and election laws in India

–  Formal and informal agents of reform: political parties, social movements and

parliaments in India

 

Organizational information: 

What is offered? 

–  The stipend would cover the travel expenses and a basic support for living expenses (2.000 €).

–  The duration of the stay would be up to 2 months during the summer or fall of 2017.

Who can apply? 

–  Early career / emerging scholars (doctoral and post-doctoral phase)

–  normally based in India

–  working on public law themes as mentioned above
