Event announcement: Conference on BR Ambedkar at Columbia University

Columbia Law School is holding a one-day event on Saturday, October 26, 2013 to mark the 100th anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar’s arrival in the US to pursue graduate studies at Columbia University.  The event is co-organised by Sudhir Krishnaswamy, the Dr. BR Ambedkar Visiting Professor of Constitutional Law at Columbia Law School, and features an impressive array of scholars from various disciplines who will jointly analyse aspects of Dr Ambedkar’s multi-faceted contributions to India’s legal, political and constitutional cultures.

The full programme is available here. For those who cannot attend the event, the organisers are planning to upload select videos after the event.  There may be a live streaming option – watch this space.

In the coming months, we will approach other important anniversaries, including Nehru’s 125th birth anniversary in 2014.  These events will provide opportunities for scholars to revisit the ideas of foundational figures on the Indian legal and constitutional landscape which in turn may lead to fresh perspectives on contemporary issues in India.
